William Ralph Satterfield, Jr., or Bill as almost everyone knew him, passed from this life on March 9, 2014 at Willson Hospice House at the age of 69 to live with his Heavenly Father. A service to celebrate Mr. Satterfield's life will be on Tuesday, March 11 at 11:00 am at Albany First United Methodist Church where he was a faithful member for 42 years. Dr. Don Adams will be officiating. Interment will be at Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, March 10 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Kimbrell Stern Funeral Home.

Bill was born on September 13, 1944, in Columbus, GA, to William Ralph Satterfield and Jackie Allen Satterfield. He moved to Albany with his family in 1954 and graduated from Albany High School in 1962 where he ran track.

While his career was remarkably diverse, he was always a teacher and coach at heart, ready to pass on any wisdom he'd learned. His first teaching job was at Dougherty High School where he taught human biology and coached baseball. This is also where he met his future wife, Jean Wills Satterfield, the love of his life. He taught and coached baseball at Deerfield Windsor School and later taught at Lee County High School and Albany High School.

In addition to teaching, he had careers at Lilliston Corporation and the City of Albany. At the time when most people considered retirement, Bill began a new journey in a field that had always held a great interest for him, the medical field. He started by working as a surgical tech with Southwest Georgia Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. Then he invested in himself by earning a nursing degree. He retired from the Medical College of Georgia as the Director of Medical Services at Calhoun State Prison.

Bill had a lifelong interest in baseball. As a boy, he started by playing Little League. In high school he played for Post 30, American Legion, and later at the University of Georgia. He coached high school baseball at Dougherty High and Deerfield and for Post 30 with his father, Ralph Satterfield. He also umpired baseball. As an ardent Braves fan, he looked forward to the start of each new season and rarely missed a game on television or the radio.

In retirement, Mr. Satterfield seldom rested. He could regularly be seen kayaking, bicycling, or playing golf. He loved to travel and was always ready to plan a trip. He also dedicated a great deal of time nurturing his lifelong passion for photography.

With an insatiable appetite for learning, he received his B.S. Degree from the University of Georgia in 1967. In 1998, he earned his M.S. Degree from Albany State University. Later, in 2006, when he was already a grandfather, he earned his Nursing Degree from Darton State College. From the earliest years of the home computers, he educated himself about the latest that technology had to offer.

Bill worked as a volunteer for 25 years in the TV ministry of Albany First United Methodist Church, refereed high school football for 30 years, was a member of the Albany Photo Club and the 1962 Albany High School Reunion Committee. He taught Sunday school for 35 years ranging from College Career classes to his beloved Roundtable Sunday School class.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Satterfield; sons Joel Satterfield (April) and Mark Satterfield (Kerry); grandchildren Bryan, Elaina, Ben, Blake, Kayleigh and Aubrey; brother Steve Satterfield; nephew Allen Satterfield (Adelaide), niece Jenny Satterfield Dumont (Devin); and great niece Mary.

Those desiring may make memorials to Albany Area Community Hospice, 320 Foundation Lane, Albany, GA, 31707 or Hosanna Choir or Miracle Meals at First United Methodist Church, 307 Flint Avenue, Albany, GA 31701.
