Muriel Bland Pace Newcomb, 90, died January 22, 2012 at her residence. She was born in Albany, GA on June 24, 1921 and was known to all as Mimi. She graduated from Albany High School, where she was a cheerleader. Mimi attended Gulf Park College and earned a degree in journalism from the University of Kentucky.

At age 14 Mimi began flying lessons and earned her pilot's license at age 16. She enjoyed being a Barn Storming Pilot and was the first person to ever land an airplane on the runway at Albany's McAfee Air Terminal.

Mimi attended Laurel Falls Camp for Girls in the Mountain, where she became a counselor, and met her mentor author Lillian Smith for whom she proofed books. Mimi was one of the camp participants in the documentary Miss Lil's Camp.

On July 7, 1942 Mimi married Robert D. (Bob) Newcomb from Iowa, who was then stationed at Turner Field. While Bob was on a tour of duty they purchased what became known as Newcomb Mayflower Moving Storage and Antiques. Mimi was the office manager until they sold the business in 1983.

Mimi was a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in the State of Georgia, The Junior League of Albany and an altar guild member at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she was a lifelong member. Mimi was also a founding member of The Mondays. Per Mimi's request may it be known she never held an elected position.

Mimi taught all of her 4 children and 10 grandchildren to swim, with some swimming at the age of 6 months.

Mimi was preceded in death by her husband Bob Newcomb, son, Robin Newcomb, great-grandson, Dawson Brown and brothers, Bill and Jim Pace.

She is survived by Bland (Don) Cleesattle, Leesburg, Ri (Don) Lamb, Albany, Ned (Mary) Newcomb, Leesburg; who produced grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Shellie (Pat) Iossa; Peter and Sarah Iossa of Bernardsville, NJ, Don (Kim) Cleesattle, Jr.; Dac and Zoe Cleesattle of Leesburg, Ken (Holley) Cleesattle; Marcie, Lansdon Cleesattle and Kenley Cleesattle of Reobeth, AL, Andrew Lamb of Fairfax, VA, Leslie (Matt) Sloan; Asher and Lucy Sloan of Fletcher, NC, Mindi (Tyler) Brown; Laine Brown, Katie (T.J.) Faircloth; Shoal Faircloth, Rob Newcomb, Burton Newcomb and Edward Newcomb all of Leesburg.

Mimi was cared for during her last years by wonderful caregivers. Helen Diane Wright, Bertha King, Fannye Lassiter, Lynn Willis, Jackie Stephens and Joan Ford for whom we are eternally grateful.

The Newcomb families invite family and friends to their home, 300 Lovers Ln. Rd. Albany, GA from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Monday, January 23, 2012.

They ask each person if possible to write and bring with them their favorite Mimi story for the family to enjoy to either visitation or the funeral service, which will be held on Tuesday January 24, 10 AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Rev. Jim Bullion and Rev. Ann Heinemann officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
